The 5th IWSC (2023): The 5th International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography (the 2nd notice)
Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing, China
October 29-30, 2023
Abstract submission deadline: May 31st, 2023
The International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography (IWSC) is a biannual conference initiated in 2015, which has been co-organized and supported financially by the International Association of Syntactic Cartographic Studies (IAOSCS) (Macao) and the Department of Linguistics, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). It aims at bringing together linguists and scientists from other relevant fields who are interested in investigating the "maps" of syntactic structures. During the 2nd IWSC (2017), the organizing committee decided to select topics for its subsequent conferences alphabetically. Consequently, the main topics for the 3rd IWSC (2019) were A-based and then the 4th IWSC (2021) focused predominantly on B-initiated terms. Following the same tradition, the key topics of the 5th IWSC will be C-initiated, including but not limited to the following recommended by the organizing committee members: C/case (and agree); causative; child language acquisition; Cinque hierarchy; clitics; complementizer; criteria features and the left periphery; crosslinguistic variation, etc..
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another conference or journal.
1. Abstracts are limited to one page (using 1-inch margins on all sides), including examples and (selected) references.
2. Abstracts must be written in English or in Chinese. Please use standard Times New Roman font, size 12 pt for English or Song font 5 for Chinese, single spaced.
3. Abstracts should be sent in PDF files.
4. All non-standard fonts should be embedded in the document.
5. Name your files in the format "author's name-conference name", e.g., xiaoxing-iwsc2023. If the paper has more than one author, a "co" should be added after the first author's name, e.g. xiaoxing-co-iwsc2023.
6. Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author, or two joint abstracts per author.
*** Only the abstracts submitted through the Easychair will be considered.
*** Abstract submission deadline: May 31st, 2023.
*** The abstracts will be peer-reviewed and the notification of acceptance will be sent to the authors by June 19th, 2023.

“C” you in October!
The 2nd General Meeting of IAOSCS Held on December 29, 2022
The Council of the International Association of Syntactic Cartographic Studies (Macao) held a meeting online at 20:00 (Beijing Time) on December 29. Honorary President Luigi Rizzi, President Fuzhen Si, Vice President Sze-Wing Tang, Vice President Wei-Tien Dylan Tsai, Chairperson of the Supervisory Committee Jie Xu, Vice Chairperson of Council Giuseppe Samo, Vice Chairperson of Council Aquiles Tescari Neto, and other committee members attended the meeting.
President Fuzhen Si chaired the meeting. She opened with an annual report of the major events of the Association in 2022, following which was a free discussion on The 5th International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography (IWSC 2023). According to the tradition, IWSC 2023 will center on topics beginning with letter C. Committee members contributed candidate themes, which include criteria features, category, cartographic representation of hierarchy, cognitive concepts, cross-linguistic variation, computational linguistics, clitics, comparative studies and so on. The Executive Committee then presented a proposal to host an online summer school in the form of a two-level lecture series: Basics & Frontier, scheduled for July 17-28, 2023. The event will be free of charge so as to reach the broadest audience.
The committee also discussed a proposal by Prof. Aquiles Tescari Neto to launch a project to create book series on syntactic cartography, in parallel with the Oxford "Studies on Comparative Linguistics" and "Syntactic Cartography" series so as to keep the syntactic cartography enterprise alive. Finally, a new term of office for the Executive Committee was confirmed, which covers the time range of 2023 to 2025. The meeting ended on a cheerful note, with President Fuzhen Si sending best wishes for a Happy New Year.

“C” you in October!
The international workshop on syntactic cartography (IWSC) is a biannual conference initiated in 2015 and has been financially supported by Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), aiming at gathering together linguists and scientists in the relevant fields who are interested in investigating the maps of syntactic structures as well as biological consequences of those syntactic structure distributions.
What's new for this year's event is that, to promote both the cartographic approach as well as the newly developed graduate program "language and human brain sciences' in BLCU, a newly proposed forum (the 1st International Forum on Language and Brain) will be held immediately after the 4th IWSC, as a separate but also interrelated part of the joint conference. The joint conference (4th IWSC & 1st IFOLAB) (IWSC&IFOLAB2021 hereafter) will be held on Oct 29th-Nov 3rd, 2021.
During the 2nd IWSC (2017), the organizing committee decided to make the selection procedure of conference topic(s) more interesting. The idea is to select topics for each conference among the key concepts or keywords related to syntactic cartography. The topic for the 3rd IWSC 2019 was of A-type: Acquisition and Language Disorders related to Syntactic Cartographic Studies; Adjectives and Adverbs; Aspects and Tense; Argument structures; Analyticity and Synthesis, etc. Following this convention, the topics for this year begin with "B"-terms, as follows:
Between Syntax and Discourse/Pragmatics/Semantics...(For Part I of the conference/IWSC2021) (Oct 29-Nov 1, 2021)
Brain and Language: New Trends and Current Issues (For Part II of the conference/IFOLAB2021)(Nov 2-3, 2021):
